Hurricanes

Hurricanes are storm systems with circulating air and sustained wind speeds of 74 miles per hour or higher. The strongest hurricanes can have wind speeds exceeding 155 miles per hour. Hurricanes are dangerous and can cause major damage because of storm surge, wind damage, rip currents and flooding. This safety topic provides information for families and individuals on hurricane warnings, how to prepare in the event of a possible hurricane, and what to do when a hurricane is imminent.
