Until January 2017, David Michaels served as the Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Michaels began serving in the post in December 2009 as OSHA’s 12th Assistant Secretary. He is the longest serving Assistant Secretary in OSHA's history.

John Howard served a 6-year term as the director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and was appointed to be a special coordinator to respond to the health effects of the September 11 attacks. In 2016, he became the first person to be appointed to a third 6-year term as NIOSH director.
